Let’s do an Exercise: Reprogramming a Negative Mentality
- Start a journal tracking your thoughts.
- For one whole day you are going to keep track of a couple of things.
- How often are you having negative thoughts?
- What situations trigger the negative thoughts?
- What emotions come up with these negative thoughts?
- On the second day you are going to create 2 sections: Negative Self Talk and Positive Self Talk.
- In the Negative Self Talk section write down every negative thought and story you believe about yourself in pencil. Any story about your abilities, appearance, fears, insecurities, past experiences etc. write at least 10 beliefs for each topic. Be thorough, the more the better.
- In the Positive Self Talk section you are going to write a counter thought that aligns with a more positive reality in your favorite color.
- After you have completed your list, for 7 days read the negative thought and then read the positive thought. Since the positive self talk will be written in your favorite color, it will stick and resonate more in your mind.
- After 7 days erase the Negative Self Talk written in pencil. Read the Positive Self Talk out loud for 3 more days.
Example:
Negative Self Talk |
Positive Self Talk |
I am not smart enough |
I have the mental capabilities to learn anything that I need to learn. |
I am not a great speaker |
With time and dedication, I have the ability to learn any skill. |
This exercise will not stop the negative thoughts in your mind from coming but a technique that will teach you to automatically counteract negative self talk with positive self talk. You can take this a step further and do it for every aspect of your life.
